Artist Bio:

Although one may not equate growing up in the 1940s in South Omaha to the world of art, Larry Covalciuc did not have a typical South Omaha family. Born in 1941 to Eli and Ann Covalciuc, Larry grew up in his father’s lithography business, eagerly watching and helping his Dad make printing plates and negatives for local printers and lithographers. His mother also had a mid-life career change to an oil painter, focusing on still life and landscape art, studying under known artist, Agustus Dunbier. His mother created over 1000 paintings during her lifetime, winning many local and regional awards. This unique exposure to various art forms, both from his father and his mother while growing up, had a lasting effect on Larry. As early as 14 years of age, Larry began creating his own photographs in his family home, using a darkroom in the basement. A few years later and before enrolling in Engineering at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, Larry attended college photography courses, processing and printing images made with a 4 x 5 Speed Graphic camera, given to Larry by his father. Processing his own color transparencies and slides led to building a darkroom in his next home and continuing to practice photography as a hobby. It was during this time that Larry decided to focus on B & W Photography Fine Art. During the last 28 years, Larry has taken courses and workshops from mentors, including Howard Bond, John Sexton, John Paul Caponigro. He has had portfolio reviews with Jay Dusard, Paul Caponigro, and Alan Ross. He has also produced and sold many pieces, utilizing his in-home dark room with capabilities of creating 20 x 24 darkroom prints and digital prints up to 44 x 50. Nature remains his most significant influence. Although the majority of his life has been spent providing custom home theatre services to Omaha residents as the founder and owner of Custom Electronics in Omaha, NE, for over 50 years, Larry is now turning his primary focus to his love of photography. When Larry is not out in nature traveling and taking photographs, you may find him cycling the roads of Iowa, Oregon, or Colorado, with his wife of 55 years, Marylin, or baking apple pies for his grandson.
